In the old days, the traditional Christmas decorations were a bit - TopicsExpress

In the old days, the traditional Christmas decorations were a bit different out here in isolated Arizona. Then the big chain stores came to town, with their Christmas ornaments for sale...and that changed us forever. We use to to decorate with...well...whatever we had around the ranch to decorate with. Colorful saddle blanks, strings of red chile peppers and tumbleweed show men were all quite common. We also brought in the dead Chain Fruit Cholla Cactus carcass into our homes, and decorated them with homemade ornaments, popcorn strings, etc (No evergreen trees in the desert, ya know.) You will still see an occasional Giant Saguaro Cactus being decorated with Christmas lights. (I love it.) The Christmas Cholla is a cactus in the Sonora Desert, which bares bright red berries in December...hence the name Christmas Cholla and its use in decorating. Also, Green corn tamales are a tasty tradition that we have borrowed from Mexico. (yum, yum, good!) The Wild Desert Mistletoe was also picked off of the Palo Verde and Mesquite Trees, and brought indoors and hung over doorways. Have you seen the huge tumbleweed Christmas tree at Chandler, AZ? Theyve been doing it for decades. Well, guess what? I have written a song that captures many of these wonderful and unique Arizona Christmas traditions...and its called, Cactus and Christmas Trees. Enjoy! MERRY CHRISTMAS, ARIZONA! FELIZ NAVIDAD, MI AMIGOS!
