In the past 24 hours, Ive heard a number of people ask, What do you think Jay Z did to provoke Solange to go off on him like that? Question: Why do we EVER ask what a victim of violence has done to provoke that violence, no matter that persons gender? Its clear that Jay Z angered Solange, but if the roles were reversed, many of us would be incensed if someone asked what Solange did to provoke the attack. Victim blaming language is unacceptable, yall. Survivors of violence in general do not speak out about their trauma because of victim blaming, and male survivors are even less likely than women. By asking what Jay Z did to provoke the violence, are we not sending a clear message to all of our young people that men cant really ever be victims of interpersonal violence?
