In the practice of contemplative prayer, we do not listen to our breathing in the dualistic sense in which our breathing is an object of our speculation. Rather, our contemplative awareness of our breath is such that we are led, as by a faithful friend, into the loving presence of God breathing into us the gift of his life. Just breathing is our way. For in our humble letting go of every idea, every goal, we are set free to discover *now*, in *this* breath the eternal immediacy of God. —James Finley #Shalem Photo by Susan Etherton
