“In the projects of Brownsville, Brooklyn, the NYPDs new - TopicsExpress

“In the projects of Brownsville, Brooklyn, the NYPDs new strategy, Omnipresence, is what it says. Despite promises of change, to some it feels like stop and frisk by another name.” Omnipresence? Who needs Orwell when you have the NYPD… Rather than launching into another creepy program, police and city officials should sit down with communities and figure out what community members need and what effective policing looks like in their neighborhoods. Maybe then, the lasting damage of discriminatory policing in NYC can begin to heal. The joint reform process ordered by Judge Scheindlin in CCR’s federal stop-and-frisk class action lawsuit could and should get us there, but for that we need the NYPD to come to the table as partners with communities and treat them as their constituents whom they are here to protect and serve and who can be an invaluable resource and partner in designing good policing.
