In the recent dialogue about racial prejudice, equality and how to understand/read our individual and collective realities, I see a growing weariness among many good hearts (while others have no choice but to carry this burden of consciousness and reality). Part of the challenge is the question of how to handle the emotional impact of current realities in order to persevere with change - this is also true in endeavors in grass-roots community building (like mentoring junior youth, for example). For many who confront long-standing ills of society, the struggle of facing them is stressful and frustrating. For others, it is hard to avoid feeling defensive. The temptation to disengage, give up and return to passive participation in materialistic existence is great. May I offer the following to every conscientious soul who longs to be part of the leaven that serves to uplift humanity: persevere in humble learning, be tenacious in determined acts that transform self and society, and seek truth with an eager heart - putting aside defensiveness and over-sensitivity... while the paths to truth are many, the truth is one and will unite us. Mankind is one human family, the flowers of one garden. (I too will be trying to remind myself of these things in order to stay motivated in learning and service!) While the ills of the world are manifold, including prejudice of multiple kinds everywhere, I just watched a very useful analysis of current realities in the US (a presentation less emotionally charged than others, which may be useful for those who find the subject matter challenging enough). With such a highly complex and profound problem, there is no single analysis or perspective that can act as a summary. So, in contribution to understanding our complex collective realities, I offer this to my friends for thoughtful reflection, with love:
