In the ultimate all calories are not created equal debate there is now even MORE evidence that artificial sweeteners (ie: NON-CALORIC substances) are contributing to obesity, and youll never guess how! They alter the microbiome in our guts and contribute to glucose intolerance as a result. Experiments carried out on mice and men (sorry, getting a bit literary on a Sunday morn) show how the use of artificial sweeteners as opposed to plain water OR a glucose solution increased blood glucose levels in the ones taking the sweeteners. They did all sorts of other really groovy stuff too (link in comments) which all seemed to prove that the artificial sweeteners altered our gut bugs to somehow produce glucose intolerance which would in the long run lead to (Im guessing) insulin resistance and obesity amongst other things. So, not only are they neurotoxic (although you will still have people denying that) but, strangely enough, they make you fat. Not only through this mechanism but also by two other major mechanisms, number one you think youre doing a good deed by cutting calories so you over-eat elsewhere as a reward and number two, your body is very, very, VERY clever (way cleverer than we are!) and when it tastes sweet, it expects CALORIES to follow! When it doesnt get the expected hit, it sends you, its unwilling and unwitting participant, out in search of more food to make up for what it hasnt received in the first place. I dont often use this word, but evil, evil, evil, EVIL stuff. If you choose to use them as part of your overall diet thats fine but PLEASE dont think they are doing you any favours. And please this is something that should NEVER go into a childs diet, not even for a treat. Give em real sugar if you have to choose between the two, at least thats honest not like these devious little critters!!! :)
