In this NPR story, OB-GYN Peter Doelger admits that the high rate of c-sections reflects fear of litigation, rather than any evidence-based medical need in many cases. He attempts to justify it by whining that getting sued is a horrible thing for the physician, a horrible thing for the nurse and a horrible thing for the institution. Which begs the question if being sued is even slightly as horrible as having unnecessary major abdominal surgery, as horrible as undergoing a procedure that carries a nearly 3 times higher risk of your death? Is it that horrible, Dr. Doelger?
