In this particular Ambeth Ocampo column José Rizal started a school where he teaches IN SPANISH the English language to his nephews whom he asks to write letters in Spanish, aside from English as a subject. It is plain to see that José Rizals medium of instruction is Spanish. Yet, our educational authorities who claim him as the national hero to be emulated by all Filipinos do not follow this particular example of José Rizal for Spanish. Both our State and Catholic Church run schools dont even have Spanish as a subject from the primary grades up to high school because they were taught the cannard that Rizal was against the preservation of Spanish. And they even cite out of context the words of Simoun in El Filibusterismos Chapter Seven to tell us that Rizal was against Spanish. José Rizal has been deliberately distorted in what he wants for his people, but our government, that even funds by law a Rizal Association, that also ignores Rizals stand for Spanish, his language and for the people he wrote his books and essays. When will this hypocrisy on the part of those who say they honor and venerate José Rizal stop in this matter about Spanish as part of our national culture and education as a people? Thanks again to Ambeth for bringing out these letters that clearly show Rizals stand for Spanish before the official policy of this government that is against any teaching of Spanish in their schools.
