In this world I will never understand why people look at the negative side of things. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a fad yes, but it is generating a large amount of money for a good cause. The author of this article debates this by applying his opinion for what makes a cause good and accordingly ALS doesnt not qualify. Why does he think he can determine this? Why does he get to decide whose suffering is in greater need? In fact I even wonder about the quality of the article when he compares questionable the campaign of Kony 2012 to the genuine work of the volunteers, doctors, scientists and others fighting against a legitimate disease like ALS. I agree that cancer does kill more peopled but does that negate or invalidate those suffering from ALS simply because they dont have the numbers? We cant apply a formula on human suffering due to disease to determine which is more important and if you do someone better explain that to the people suffering from ALS. Is this a viral crazy thing - yes.... does it have the sustainability of the other major fundraisers like Run for the Cure ... no. Will this continue year after year ... probably not but for now a spontaneous event has triggered a unprecedented result of more than 25 times more money for research and support to those affected than ever before. It might be a viral gimmick but how is it any different than Team Diabetes offering a trip to Munich for a marathon fundraiser? The revenues generated can sustain them for a long period of time if managed well so that once this fad is over and the income river dries up to a trickle again then good work can continue. I think it is also important to keep in mind that the author is also jumping on the ALS bandwagon but in a way that might promote sales for this magazine. I can almost hear his editor saying Scott, we need to do an article on this ALS thing but make with twist to catch our readers attention. So why be a negative voice and why try to invalidate suffering due to lack of numbers when for a moment in time a group of people can benefit from so much attention. Lets focus on the positive side.
