Inciweb: Papoose Fire (Wildfire): The Papoose Fire was started by lightning on July 8, 2013, about 40 miles west of Salmon, Idaho. The fire is being managed by the U.S. Forest Service, Salmon-Challis National Forest. Incident Commander Tim Metzger assumed control of the fire on July 12, classified as a Type-3 incident. The fire is burning in grass, brush and timber in extremely steep, rugged and inaccessible terrain above the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The fire was initial attacked by a rapeller crew upon detection, but due to steep slopes, rollout of burning material prevented containment of the fire at that time. Fire managers are working with river outfitters to assess campsites and heritage sites that may be at risk. Firefighters are also clearing ground fuels in these sites where necessary. Boaters on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River are checking in with forest personnel to confirm their campsites are open. Boaters are asked to be flexible regarding space-sharing and possible changes in campsite... goo.gl/3wumm
