“Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise, and apply your mind to my knowledge; For it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, that they may be ready on your lips” (Proverbs 22:17-18 NASB). While the responsibility of training a child lies squarely on the shoulders of the parents, not everything needs to come the parents’ own ingenuity and wisdom. That would be madness. Parents need to instruct their child to learn from and seek out other sources of wise, godly advice. Proverbs 22:17-21 serve as an introduction for a new section in the Book of Proverbs that will go through Proverbs 24:34. One again, we see the proverbs taking the tone of a father instructing his son. As the father is training his son, he now relays the wisdom he has learned from other unnamed wise men. If his words were not enough to convict, perhaps the words of these other wise men will. They will add weight and backing to the father’s instructions. In addition, he trains his son to store up and heed counsel from several sources. Parents should recognize they are not the only source of wisdom and good advice in a child’s life and supplement their instruction with other godly instruction. jeremysprouse.wordpress/2013/08/05/a-proverb-for-the-day-2217-18/
