Increase your knowledge of the African Culture: “Proverb of the Week” This week, we will learning about a language in Africa called Tigrinya, its origin and a popular saying in the language. Here is this week’s proverb. “When you sort out the grains, it becomes pure.” In Swahili this proverb translates to “Ukipepeta nafaka, inabaki iliyo safi.” Among the Tigrinya people, grains especially maize and sorghum have over the years been important part of their cuisines. After harvesting sorghum, and in the course of its preparation for milling or pounding in preparation for meals, great care is taken to sort out impurities and make it clean and pure from impurities. This proverb has its conceptual origin in the process of the preparation of sorghum. There are two countries in Africa mostly known for speaking this language and they are credited with the origin of Tigrinya. Could you take a guess?
