Increasing sales of consumer electronics goods, telecom/ networking market and growth in the use of portable/wireless products globally are driving the growth of the semiconductor design industry. An embedded system consists of hardware and software. VLSI is used to design integrated circuits by combining millions and billions of transistors into a single chip. VLSI results in reduced sizes and costs for embedded systems. While the embedded system sits on top of everything, VLSI is the core part of an embedded system as the whole system depends on VLSI design. Embedded engineers write the software that controls the VLSI chips. Embedded software can be any code which interacts with the hardware layer, ranging from the hardware abstraction layer, device drivers, kernel programming to application programming. The embedded hardware designer is responsible for hardware design schematic , PCB layout, BOM creation, hardware board debugging and testing, and system integration testing. Desired skills are hardware design using 8-/16-/32-bit microcontrollers, microprocessor-based systems. The report also suggests that the industry promises 3.5 million jobs by 2015. But unfortunately, the industry is grappling with the problem of talent shortage. Several engineering universities in the country are far from understanding the requirements of the industry and train the students accordingly. This has resulted into two extremes, where on one hand the industry needs talent and on the other hand there is an abundance of engineers who have not been trained in necessary skills. The minimum requirement is a bachelor’s/ master’s degree in engineering with specialisation in electronics and electrical or computer science. But it is preferable for a candidate to have some hardware integration experience, good software coding skills and the ability to deal with and develop algorithms to solve problems. An engineer starting his career with a bachelor’s degree can expect anything between Rs. 400,000 and Rs. 700,000 per annum. Dont do/think =========== * Entry for freshers in embedded system is really easy… * I will get a job immediately, coz I have an embedded system certification from the great -ABC- institution. * If I add one or two projects in my resume then i can easily get a job. * I have 80% marks in all the certificates. The interviewer will accept me for this field. Then What I want to do/Think? ======================== * You should learn in-depth. For hardware engineers, learn from flipflop, micro processor….etc. For software engineers, learn from compilers, linkers, OS concepts….etc. * Try to utilize your lab facilities. Especially your lab hardwares. * Learn the Linux OS for embedded system. Coz it has good future in embedded system and in India. Moreover, Linux is exactly suitable for embedded system field rather than the MS windows. Another reason is, its open source and no need to depend on any proprietary softwares so that you can learn more and get more real time experience. * Plan to buy a hardware board like ARM 7. You can get the hardware from Rs.2000/- to Rs.10,000 based on the configuration. Using these boards, you can feel the real time experience and you can surely cross the technical interview. * You should sharp your language skills like C….etc. Language is very important for s/w embedded system engineers. * Try to contribute to some international forums, mailing lists and magazines like linuxdevices, embedded, sourceforge.net. So that you can update your knowledge in this field and really understand whats happening in the current embedded field on industries side. What are the available chances for getting a job in this field =========================================== (1) Select an embedded system company in your college placements. (2) If you dont have the placements, send your resumes for selected embedded system companies, even you are an fresher. Insist your full of interest in embedded system along with an covering letter. DO NOT SEND YOUR CV AS AN JUNG/SPAM OR “CC” TO ALL THE COMPANIES. ITS A BAD ATTITUDE. (3) After you finish your degree, you may join some embedded system course. But placements from training institutes have no guarantee. Its depends on your capability. (4) For entry level, small companies are best to learn a lot in this field rather than the big companes. So your first preference should be small/startup companies. (5) Last but not least, keep on trying ,even you failed in many interviews.
