Independence Monument, a 450-foot tower in the heart of Colorado National Monument, is usually climbed by the classic Otto Route. John Otto, a pioneer climber and trail-builder, did the first ascent of Indy back in 1911, constructing a ladder of pipes, tree trunks, and chopped steps up the tower.
