Independent Senator Nick Xenophon says he will respect his new Senate colleagues despite their lack of experience, but suggests the "bizarre" preference system that led to the election of a number of micro-parties needs changing. Mr Xenophon, who will play a critical role in the next Senate, also suggested that Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott might have a difficult time fulfilling his signature promises of repealing the carbon tax and introducing a multibillion dollar paid parental leave scheme.
