India Votes 2014 - Citizens Charter for Democratic Values Day 4 of the campaign - 121 likes. On Day 5 and Day 6 we will run a paid campaign on Facebook, may be that gives us more reach! . We will be running our campaign for a total of 7 days. On 8th day, we will send this petition to all the national level political parties and the CEC of India. Please support by sharing and liking and asking others to do the same - all we are saying is - please talk to us about your vision and roadmap for our country and engage with each other in a heathy debate in a transparent and democratic manner. ************ Context - This is a request to the political class of India, the top leaders of every political party and the independent constitutional bodies like the Election Commission of India and the Honourable Supreme Court. ************ What are we asking for ? We are the citizens of India....and we are about to exercise our vote in the 2014 parliamentary elections. We are the target for campaign messaging, marketing communication, PR, all kind of rumours, spams, the truth and the lies, the facts and the fiction, the good, the bad and the ugly, views, analysis and coverage through multiple sources. The newspapers, TV, social media, party workers, trolls, agencies, contractors, volunteers....there are thousands of people who are participating in this game of mind share grab to translate into votes and seats. Unfortunately Most of this messaging is coloured. We would like to see a weekly debate between various key leaders representing the political parties e.g. Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Aravind Kejriwal, 3rd front........ at least 3-4 leaders representing the major political parties/alliances. This debate should be telecast LIVE without any editing across the nation. This debate should be translated into all languages. The PM candidates (de facto party face if PM candidate is not announced) should talk on behalf of their party. It should happen every week, till the time election commission permits. It should be moderated by a Supreme Court judge, chief election commissioner and may be few other people with impeccable integrity, selected by SC/CEC, if they want to. Media houses should be allowed to telecast without any editing. The model can be something like this - all leaders talk for say 15 minutes about - 1. Why should we elect them 2. What they have done in past and 3. What they will do if elected to power. Over and above their speech, they will have a set of common questions, mandatory to answer during the speech. After this first round, each leader will face 5 pointed unambiguous questions from the other leaders in the debate. They will have to reply to these questions then and there or promise to reply in the next weeks debate if they dont know the answer. Every week, the debate would start with the previous weeks unanswered questions. Each leader will be allowed to defend his position and answer the questions asked, as well as ask another round of questions to the others. Alternatively each week can be based on a theme like economic policy, law and order, foreign policy, poverty alleviation etc. This is not a perfect model but can be designed and refined further, if there is a will. This way we will hear every week, directly from the people who want to lead this country. Can you imagine - National debate, live telecast, properly moderated, every week. We dont know how to take it forward, so we created this page. Like if you like the concept. Understand that its not perfect but can be the starting point. We deserve it from the people who wish to manage this country. Dont we?
