Indian Currency Timeline: -Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was established on 1st April, 1935. -The first Five Rupee banknote was issued bearing the portrait of George VI. -India brought out its distinctive coins on 15th August, 1950. -Banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series were introduced in 1996. -Fresh banknotes issued by Reserve Bank of India till August 2006 were serially numbered. -"STAR series" numbering system were adopted for replacement of defectively printed banknotes.
