Indian Navy has inducted a newly-built Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) that will enhance its ocean surveillance and patrolling capabilities. Indias Port Blair-based tri-services Andaman and Nicobar Command chief Air Marshal P.K. Roy formally commissioned the ship into the Indian Navy at an event in Goa. The OPV, indigenously designed and built by the Indian defence public sector Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), demonstrates the immense potential of the countrys indigenous ship designing and building capabilities, an Indian Navy officer said. Induction of INS Saryu is aimed at meeting the increasing ocean surveillance and patrolling requirements of the Indian Navy, he added. The primary role of the ship is to undertake surveillance of the 2.2 million sq km of exclusive economic zone in the Indian Ocean region, anti-piracy patrols, fleet support operations, and provide maritime security to offshore assets of India and carry out escort operations for high value assets. Capable of carrying an indigenous Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter on board, the ships weapon and sensor outfit includes a Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) 76.2 mm gun with an electro-optic fire control system, two 30mm guns as close in weapon systems, latest navigational and early warning radars, chaff launchers for self-protection and an integrated Electronic Support Measures system to undertake all assigned missions. Equipped with two rigid inflatable fast motor boats, the ship is propelled by two SEMT diesel engines which are the largest engines of its type to be inducted in the Indian Navy, enabling the ship to achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots. The entire propulsion and power management of the ship is controlled electronically by means of a Remote Control System which incorporates the Automatic Power Management System also. A fully integrated LAN system on board along with a CCTV management system ensures optimal utilization of on board equipment and better crew efficiency.
