Indian Politics 20th August-Birth day of Rajiv Gandhi. Had he been alive, he will be 69 today! How do you rate his legacy? ****************** People, specially his followers think he brought modern vision to India. We beg to differ. He was not even remotely as matured as Indira or Neheru. Indira Gandhi dealt with iron first against religious fanatics. But Rajiv followed appeasement policy for Sahabanu case and Ram Janmovumi issue. This resulted in rise of BJP. BJP had only 2 MP in 1984. But it is because of him a small minority party of 2 become 92 in 89 election. With Indira such a meteoric rise of BJP would not have been possible as Indira always dealt with communal elements very strongly. BJP owes its growth to Rajiv;s appeasement legacy. But yes, he brought some liberalization of Indian economy. He started the process of globalization but given that time, India had no choice either. But he was also more democratic than his mother. He was a very well mannered PM from Gandhi-Neheru dynasty who won the heart of the Indians as a beloved crowned prince. Nobody had a mandate of 420 seats in Indian history-he would have used to change the Indian constitution to more modernity-instead he used that power to create more division among Hindu and Muslim civil laws. He was misdirected by his ill famous coterie of Dun school.
