Indiana: The House voted 52-43 today to amend HJR3, which would have added a ban on marriage, civil unions, and anything similar to marriage to the state constitution if passed at the ballot box this November. The amendment removes the second sentence of the ballot question, the one about civil unions and other similar relationship statuses. Since the wording of the resolution no longer matches the wording passed during the prior legislature, this is essentially a brand new marriage amendment. This, then, resets the clock, such that if this resolution passes both chambers of the legislature this year, it would have to pass again using identical language in 2015 or 2016 in order to go to the November 2016 ballot.
