Indigenous school teacher killed in road mishap, cops attacked by angry mob:- Agartala, Aug 18, 2013 : An Assam-based petrol tanker (AS01-BC-1475) grazed an indigenous female school teacher to death at Chhankhola area under Khowai sub-division this morning. Two DSPs, one Sub-Inspector of the state police and Officer-in-Charge of Khowai police station sustained serious injuries later today after an angry mob of over 200 indigenous people stormed Baijalbari police station following no action from the authorities, local sources said. The incident occurred between 11 am and 11:50 am this morning. Asked about the issue, the police said that an Assam-based empty petrol tanker moving for Dharmanagar en route to Assam knocked dead an indigenous female school teacher – Nivarani Debbarma (28). She was reported dead on the spot. An angry mob of local indigenous people gathered on the spot shortly after the incident. While the truck driver Shamsul Haque (33) was reported to have stopped the vehicle to inquire about the status of the victim, retaliation from the former forced him to flee. His assistant Ayaz Miah (24) was caught and was subjected to severe torture by the angered indigenous people. The news of the accident and ensuing death reached adjoining Baijalbari police outpost and a contingent of police reached the spot and managed to rescue the tanker assistant in an injured condition. However, the mob changed targets and attacked the police instead. The situation worsened as a peeved constable slapped an indigenous youth for abusing him, letting the tense situation spiral out of control. A brief pitched battle ensued till the officer in charge of Khowai police station Asish Deb reached the spot with reinforcement and managed to send back the entire police force to the nearby Baizolbari police outpost. However, the indigenous mob of about two hundred people , reinforced by brethren from nearby areas, rushed towards the Baizolbari outpost clashed with the police force . In the trouble DSP (DIB) Prasun Tripura , officer in charge of Khowai police station Asish Deb, SDPO (Khowai) Jyotish Ranjan Das Chowdhury and sub-inspector Palash Dutta sustained injuries . The SDPO and Sub-inspector Palash Dutta had to be rushed to Khowai district hospital. But the indigenous mob had managed to storm the Baizolbari police outpost and completely ransack it . Even though SP (Khoawai) Manohar Ippar took no initiative to cope up with the tense situation, finally junior police officers persuaded the irate indigenous mob to see reason and return home with an assurance that the driver and assistant of the empty petrol tanker and the constable who had slapped an indigenous youth would be punished. Police sources said that driver of the petrol tanker Samsul Haq and his assistant Ayaz Mia had been detained though injured Ayaz was under treatment.
