Individuals suffering from Schizophrenia may hear voices that are not there or may believe that people are reading their mind, controlling their thoughts, or planning to hurt them, which can make them withdrawn or extremely agitated. Individuals living with Schizophrenia may not make sense when they talk or may sit for hours without moving or talking. Schizophrenia occurs in similar rates throughout ethnic groups, affects both men and women equally, and is diagnosed in roughly 1% of Americans. Some predictive factors that may indicate Schizophrenia include isolating oneself and withdrawing from others, an increase in unusual thoughts and suspicions, and a family history of psychosis. There are 3 broad categories of symptoms: • Positive symptoms are psychotic behaviors not seen in individuals not diagnosed with Schizophrenia. They often lose touch with reality such as experiencing hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders (such as trouble organizing thoughts or making up words), and movement disorders (such as agitated body movements, repeated motions, or becoming catatonic). • Negative symptoms are associated with disruptions to normal emotions and behaviors. These symptoms are harder to recognize and can be mistaken for depression. These types of symptoms can include flat affect, lack of pleasure in everyday life, lack of ability to begin and sustain planned activities, neglecting personal hygiene, and speaking too little even when forced to interact. • Cognitive symptoms are less subtle but may be difficult to recognize as part of the disorder. They can include poor executive functioning (which is the ability to understand information and use it to make decisions), trouble focusing or paying attention, and problems with working memory.
