Indonesia’s Bali to Host Miss Universe 2014 Beauty Peageant Jakarta - Almost less than a hundred of beauty queens from across the globe will gather in Bali this year for the 2014 Miss Universe pageant, the president and the chairwomen of Puteri Indonesia, Mooryati Soedibyo, said during her visit to the resort island on Tuesday. Indonesia’s popular island resort was chosen because of its global popularity and its track record of hosting international events, Mooryati Soedibyo, the president of Puteri Indonesia said in Denpasar, capital of Bali. Gabriela Isler, the reigning Miss Universe from Venezuela, along the members of Miss Universe Organization met with Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastikalast last January during their visit in Indonesia that day to discuss the planned beauty pageant, according to the Indonesian news portal. Visiting a number of locations in Bali that could be used as venues for the pageant, Soedibyo said. The organization had already begun preparing for the October 2014 competition after they received a confirmation last night from the president of the Miss Universe Organization, Paula Shugart, that Brazil and The Philippines government cannot sustain the needs of the said event. The Philippine government received a proposal from Miss Universe organizers to host the international competition this week during their visit in Manila. The Honorable Secretary of Tourism of the Philippines, Ramon Reyes Jimenez, Jr., said that at this moment it is not possible to assume this commitment. However, the government has received another proposal from MUO, with undisclosed details at the moment. “The MUO is very interested on having the Miss Universe 2014 competition in the country. We have listened to their presentation. At the beginning they wanted economical support from our government; we have told them that the government cannot do it as of the moment because the Miss World Organisation already made a proposal this year and we already signed an agreement between our government and their organization”. “At this moment we cannot give economical support to this two big celebrations in any way; we can only support one event this year. Its an honor for us to have Miss World in our country for the very first time in the history.” said Jimenez to the journalists reunited in his office last night. “Due to our answer, they (the MUO) have made a new proposal, and we promised to give them an answer next week. They are eager to know if they will be able to hold their competition in the Philippines”. “On Saturday or Sunday, we will be giving a definite answer to their demands” finished Jimenez. However, the one-month pageant will likely draw protests again across the country from hard-line Muslims, who stage public protests every year when Indonesian contestants join any international beauty competition like what happened in Miss World last year in Bali. The demonstrators warned again the government against issuing a permit to the event`s organising committee of Puteri Indonesia and Miss Universe Org., arguing that the contest would have a negative impact on the public, particularly the younger generation. Miss Universe Org. will axed the famed bikinis from this year’s pageant for the first time in the history, replacing the skimpy swimsuits with conservative beach sarongs amid mounting protests from hardline Muslim groups that happened last year during the Miss World finals in the country, organizers said Tuesday. The pageant will be held on October 6, Monday, in the resort island of Bali for the first time in the history of Miss Universe. Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country.
