"Industrial management talks about benefits of scaling up operations that result in lowering fixed costs. However this will involve more than just economics, it will also result in considerable ecological and environmental gain as the use of fossil fuels will diminish. In India we have the Mount Abu solar project that uses solar power for feeding 50,000 people daily. So it is not impossible. Various countries have tried it and developed successful models. Now we are talking about a power grid that will tap into water, wind and solar power. This will require a big adjustment as devices running on fossil fuel have to be redesigned to run on electricity. The costs will have to factor that too. Initially it will require heavy investment but long term gains will certainly exceed such costs. However, both producers and consumers resist change unless there are incentives and education to enable them to know the benefits. This is another cost. So overall the calculation is very complex."- Jagannath Chatterjee
