Influence #4 Jeff Mills -The Bells When and Where were you the first time you heard this Detroit Classic? I first heard this track sometime in 98, I think. I was at a friends ,sisters apartment , who was also a House Music DJ. She was getting ready for her set at a Howard University party.( Yes they were still playing House music at Howard then,,,barely). She was playing samples of tracks that were going to be apart of her set. Now I have to admit, in 1998 I wasnt much of a House Music fan, so I was kind of bored to tears. She then said, I kind of want to play this new record I bought, but Im scared. She puts it on the 1200 and after the first few bars I perked up. I said to myself, this is pretty hard for House Music and then at about the one minute mark the infamous melody comes in. The hair stands up on the back of my neck but the stupid girl abruptly takes the needle off the record and says, Naw , theres no way Ill play that. Fast forward, four hours later, we all return to her apartment after the party and I spend a whole hour trying to find THAT record with the hands on it. Once I did, I saw that it was from a guy named Mr. Jeff Mills. I played the record again and a room full of tired house heads started dancing.
