Info on Albion Rovers for the uninitiated......deepest darkest coatbrig.......oooft. Make sure you take some wipes!!! Greg FRIDAY, 28 JUNE 2013 11:52 Albion Rovers Factfile WRITTEN BY LINDSAY HERRON CLIFTONHILL Rangers are heading to Coatbridge for the first time since 1978 RANGERS will be heading to Cliftonhill Park for the first time in 35 years after landing Albion Rovers in the first round draw of the Ramsdens Cup. The Light Blues have not travelled to Coatbridge for a match since meeting Rovers in the first round of the League Cup on August 23, 1978 in John Greig’s first season in charge as manager. Derek Parlane scored the only goal of the game and Rangers went on to win the trophy again that season, beating Aberdeen in the final. The last time Rangers played Albion Rovers at all was in the third round of the Scottish Cup on February 6, 1982 and it was a much more comfortable day. Rangers won 6-2 with goals from Derek Johntone, John MacDonald, Bobby Russell, Colin McAdam, Dave McPherson (penalty) and Ian Redford. Coincidentally Jim Stewart was the Rangers keeper that day. The Coatbridge side have beaten Rangers twice in their history, the last win coming in a league match in 1923. However, the other win was very famous. They beat the Light Blues 2-0 in a second replay of their Scottish Cup semi-final in 1920 to go on and reach a major final for the only time in their history but were beaten 3-2 by Kilmarnock. Rovers passed Rangers on the way to the Third Division last season, having been relegated from SFL 2. They finished eight points adrift of second bottom East Fife who retained their Second Division status by beating Peterhead in the play-off final. They won just seven of their 36 matches and lost 82 goals having scored 45. They are now bossed by James Ward who was promoted from the assistant’s position on May 16 to replace former player/boss Todd Lumsden. Ward formerly coached with Clyde, Alloa and Hamilton. Of course, former Rangers defender Marvin Andrew turned out for the Rovers last season playing 17 times after joining at the turn of the year. Big Marv left in the summer and is joining East Fife. One problem for the Coatbridge side could be the suitability of their Clifonthill home to stage the match as the capacity is just 1249.
