Information from Blue Mountains Fire Control Centre on the bush fire situation Cliff Drive, Katoomba. Issued Sunday 2nd November 2014 1700hrs A bush fire is burning in remote and rugged bush-land on Cliff Drive west of Katoomba. The fire is currently 17 hectares in size and is being controlled. Currently there is no direct threat to properties. Today, 180 NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire Rescue NSW and National Parks & Wildlife Service firefighters, with the support of 6 water bombing aircraft, have been working throughout the day mopping up the active edges of the fire ground around homes on Cliff Drive and constructing containment lines below Cahills Lookout. Current Situation NSW RFS is urging local residents in the Katoomba area in the vicinity of Cliff Drive, Brougham Street, Essendene Road and Moss Street to remain vigilant, as active fire is still present. It is likely that smoke will be noticeable for some time as efforts are being made to contain the fire. Under these conditions fires can be difficult to control. Embers may be blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires. The fire has reached the valley floor in a number of locations below Cahills Lookout and continues to burn along the cliff face below Cliff Drive. Although it is very difficult to access this part of the fire, Remote Area Fire Teams (RAFT) are currently working to contain the fire below the cliff. Tonight, fire crews will continue to patrol and mop up the fire affected areas. The weather outlook for Monday 3/11/2014. Maximum temperature 17c and a relative humidity of 50%. Winds E/NE 20kph with a 25% chance of showers. Advice Residents in the area around Cliff Drive, Brougham Street, Essendene Road and Moss Street should not enter any areas of bushland that have been fire affected. •Monitor conditions in your area and check and follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan. If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes. Leaving early is your safest option. Road Closures Due to bush fire activity and smoke there are a number of local road closures. Please also be aware that road closures may occur without notice. However, no major tourism destinations are affected.
