SongwritingWith:Soldiers is an Austin nonprofit organization founded by Darden Smith that conducts retreats that match recently returned veterans with world-class songwriters. During the retreats, they write songs together, a process that allows the veterans to tell their stories in a non-judgmental environment, provide catharsis, and aid their transition into civilian life. Through M-AAA’s Artistic Innovations grant program, M-AAA funded the April 2013 retreat. This concert will be the first time these songs have been performed outside of a SW:S retreat. The performers are well-regarded songwriters and recording artists. • Darden Smith has released 14 albums that mix folk, country, roots and Texas influences. He is the founder and creative director of SongwritingWith:Soldiers. • Radney Foster has released 14 albums and placed nine songs on the country Top 40 as a recording artist. As a songwriter, his songs have been covered by such artists as Sarah Evans, Keith Urban, the Dixie Chicks, and Hootie and the Blowfish. • Jay Clementi has written songs for Luke Bryan, Darius Rucker, Suzy Bogguss, and Martina McBride. He sang on Willie Nelson’s album You Don’t Know Me: The Songs of Cindy Walker, which was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. 6 p.m.-8 p.m., Friday, June 6 1 p.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, June 7 CitizenSoldierArtist exhibition CitizenSoldierArtist explores how veterans are using the arts to process and heal from the physical and psychological wounds of war. This show, which M-AAA is developing for a touring exhibition, will feature 18 artists. Works include photography, painting, video, audio, and poetry. Although the works are not graphic, some themes may not be suitable for young children. 1 p.m.-2p.m. Record, React, Rehabilitate, Remember—Veterans and Contemporary Art This discussion will highlight the intersection of the arts and military service, and how the arts are a powerful mechanism in assisting veterans. It will feature artists who are veterans of war and arts professionals who work with veterans to promote art-making. This event is intended for the general public, as well as professionals working in the arts or with veterans. Seating is limited and reservations are required. For more information, go to maaa.org/veterans. 2:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Papermaking with Combat Paper Project Combat Paper Project uses traditional hand papermaking to transform clothing rags (often military uniforms) into paper. The process broadens the traditional narrative surrounding the military experience and warfare. The work also generates a conversation between veterans and civilians regarding our collective responsibilities and shared understanding in war. Materials will be provided and participants will leave with their own handmade sheets of Combat Paper.
