Initially I would like thanks Dr.Deepa Shree For This Information.... This is a write up by Her for us to get aware of this .... Good evening to all the wonderful people ONE MUST KNOW ABOUT THIS CONDITION!!!!!! This story is a little complicated and I tried to make it simple. Hope you find it easy to understand. Just wanted to share one of our recent life saving measures to save this patient. Everybody knows about heart attack, stroke, cancer but there are lot of other life threatening conditions that most of us are unaware of. My grandmother died of this condition. My grand mother died of this condition years ago when I was in my college days and I just wish I knew that these things could be performed. If you are wondering what I am on about, I am talking about a condition called pulmonary embolism, yes a posh name for a clot in the lung arteries. Pulmonary means lung related and embolus means clot that has migrated from somewhere to land in the lung arteries. This can be life threatening as a big clot the artery supplying lungs can put lot of back pressure on the heart and lead to heart failure and patients can die in few hours if not picked on time. You all must have heard of deep vein thrombus which is nothing but a clot in the deep veins of the legs when someone remains immobile due to recent surgery, stroke etc. Basically, the blood in the legs due to lack of mobility tends to stagnate and forms a clot, this tends to migrate up and land in lung arteries, as all the leg veins eventually drain to the heart and from there to lungs via pulmonary arteries. How does one detect these things? If someone suddenly becomes breathless or develops chest pain on breathing especially in the context of recent surgery or underlying cancer, one should strongly suspect this. Most of the cases are missed unfortunately. Can this be prevented? Yes Please see pictures below which demonstrates one such recent case of mine where in this patient developed a big clot in the lung artery and by using small wires and tubes and few blood thinning agents, this clot was broken and we sucked the clot out. To prevent further clot from migrating up, we also put a filter in one of the big veins which connects the lung arteries and leg veins. This filter traps the clot. The 3 black and white images are from the case that has been saved recently. As doctors, its such a fantastic feeling to see someone go home with a smile after being through near death experience and I am extremely honoured to be in this profession and I am still basking in the glory of a successful case……… although I try to tell myself, stay calm and don’t blow your trumpet, cant help it at times. Have a good evening and a great week ahead.
