Injection technique Evidence shows that differences in injection technique can affect the absorption of insulin and consequently cause variations in glucose control. It is important therefore to be taught the correct technique to try to reduce the chances of this occurring. Insulin should be injected into the cutaneous layer of the skin. This layer is just under the dermis and above the muscle layer. There are still accounts of incorrect amounts of insulin being drawn up and administered. A story in America in April this year tells of a case in which a patient was admitted with severe hypoglycaemia and close discussion revealed that the caregiver had been administering twice the prescribed dose of insulin as he had never actually been shown how to draw it up.
