Injured camper airlifted from Kalalau KALALAU — A female camper was airlifted from Kalalau this afternoon after injuring her right calf. She was taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police Dispatch was notified about the incident at approximately 3 p.m. by a pilot with Mauna Loa Helicopters who saw S.O.S. carved in the sand on Kalalau Beach along with a red flag. Air1 with Rescue 3 on board responded to the call. Upon landing on the beach, the rescue specialists were met by people who informed them about the injured woman and that she could be found above the big pools located approximately two miles from the beach. The rescue specialists returned to the air and began searching for the victim through the canopy of trees when someone waved them down and told them that she was about 100-feet above the stream. The rescue specialists then flew to the nearest landing zone and short hauled one of the rescuers to where the victim was located. After placing the victim in an air rescue vest, the victim and the rescuer were short hauled back to the landing zone. From there, they flew to Waimea Canyon Park where awaiting medics transported the victim to KVMH.
