Inmates at California State Prison-Solano are learning high-tech skills while giving back to the community through the optical program at the prison. In the California Prison Industry Authority program, inmates make eyeglasses for both the state and Medi-Cal - most often for children who would otherwise not be able to afford glasses. Inmates in the program can become certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which will aid in finding a good job upon release. And inmates who participate in CALPIA programs have a much lower rate of recidivism than those who do not. Some of these eye prescriptions for children where they cant see their parents or anything, thats when I started saying, Yeah, Im really helping out there, said inmate Roy Rodriguez, recently interviewed by The Reporter, a Vacaville newspaper. In fact, were doing (a prescription) right now for a small child ... Hopefully when we finish, hell be able to see his parents and brothers and sisters. Read more: ow.ly/y8BqP.
