Inside Child Poverty The Tenants Protection Association ( Chistchurch) have done a survey on rent increases and housing conditions. You can find it here: tpa.org.nz/sites/tpa.org.nz/files/TPA%20Rental%20Survey%20Report%202013_0.pdf 70% of tenants reported having 1 or more rent increases in the 2 years post the earthquakes Average total rent increase per week for all areas was $42.90 a week with the inner North area of Christchurch having the highest average rent increase amount of $60 88% of tenants reported paying over 25% of their annual income in rent Over half of tenants (57.8%) reported paying over 40% of their annual income in rent 34% of tenants reported paying over 50% of their annual income in rent 8% of tenants reported payingover 75% of their annual income in rent Effects of Rental Increases 34.7% of tenants reported they now have to find other accommodation due to not being able to afford the rental increases Almost half of tenants reported mould in their households (48%). Less than half of tenanted dwellings were reported to be insulated (40%) The majority of tenants reported living in earthquake damaged homes (60%) with problems ranging from minor cracks to major structural issues 85.3% of tenants who reported having 1 or more rent increases said they are affected negatively by the increases. These negative effects include: Inability to afford food, heating, pay power bills, and having to get extra flatmates . Inability to afford doctor’s visits and medicine Inability to afford / find more suitable or appropriate housing and so moving away from the city Inability to save for a house deposit Inability to afford any extras / discretionary spending such as holidays, petrol, schoolcamps, clothes, leisure activities Feeling stress, worry, depression, fear of the future What a great organisation and survey - Thanks TPA and thanks to Cara for the heads up .
