Inside Eric Dillard’s 221.05-mph monster Pro Extreme - TopicsExpress

Inside Eric Dillard’s 221.05-mph monster Pro Extreme record Eric Dillard drove Jose Gonzalez’s Steve Petty-tuned “El General” turbocharged Camaro to a all-time eighth-mile speed record for doorslammers of 221.05 mph at the PDRA inaugural event. The car had previously run a 219.97 pass that backed up the 221 lap for the record. The Camaro is powered by a turbocharged big block built by Pro Line Racing Engines estimated to make around 4,000 hp. Amazingly, the record setting 3.564/221.05 timing came on a losing effort. Dillard lost to Todd Martin, whose supercharged Mustang ran a 3.578/211.36 but left first and got the win by .003 of a second! Crew chief, Steve Petty, said that the Pro Extreme Camaro was 100 lbs. over the 2275 minimum. That might account for the .941 sixty-foot time on that pass, which is slow compared to the .877 sixty-foot times being recorded for the supercharged Pro Extreme racers. The big Camaro ran 330 feet in just 2.44 seconds and the next 330 feet in just 1.124 seconds so the turbo car was really starting to charge. If the turbocharged cars could ever figure out a way to achieve sixty-foot times comparable to their supercharged opponents they would dominate the class.
