Inside North-Eastern Kentucky Football Wow, there’s a lot of football related stuff going on in the area, and most of it is not happening on the field. If you have a pulse, you have probably heard about Fairviewgate. Fairview is under investigation, again. After two players being ruled ineligible last season, and it ending with a court injunction allowing the players to play, Fairview is once again under investigation and it appears Fairview will not win this one with some action already taken: Principal/AD/assistant coach Gary McPeek (uncle of head coach, Nathan McPeek) being demoted from all three positions to elementary physical education teacher and some schools already being notified that they will be awarded wins from last season due to Fairview’s violation of KHSAA rules. We will find out much more as this week unfolds. Stay tuned. I look for the KHSAA to win this one and, at least, tie the series. Currently: Fairview 1 KHSAA 0 After this week: Fairview 1 KHSAA 1 The Week in Review Raceland 32 Paintsville 10 The Rams secured the District Championship by beating Paintsville. The Tigers offense was held in check and didn’t ever threaten the Rams defense. The Raceland defense only allowed one field goal, with Paintsville’s other score coming on a short kick off return. Raceland’s defense looked solid, while the offense was a little sluggish at times, but still racked up over 400 yards of offense. There is a strong possibility of a rematch in round two of the KHSAA playoffs, this time in Raceland. Johnson Central 42 Ashland 7 The Tomcats are much improved, but Johnson Central is proving they on a different level. Obviously Ashland never threatened the Golden Eagles who cruised to another District Championship - which they have pretty much owned in recent years. Johnson Central looks to be headed for a showdown with Highlands for the Regional Championship. But, first, they have a matchup with another undefeated team - Belfry. Russell 42 East Carter 18 The Red Devils secured the number two seed in the KHSAA playoffs. Russell looks ready for a possible run and rematch with District foe Mason County. But, that will not be an easy road. The Red Devils are improved, but not to the level that they can take anyone lightly. Fairview 49 Nicholas County 14 The Eagles, removed their helmet decals I guess they are still the Eagles, secured the number two spot in the District with this win over Nicholas County. It is still unclear if they will, in fact, be the number two team, or if they will be moved down or out completely due to the KHSAA penalties. We should find out for sure early in the week. Boyd County 25 Greenup County 21 The Lions get their first win of the season in exciting form, scoring the game winning touchdown late in the game. Only fitting for Boyd County to end their losing streak against a team that ended their losing streak earlier in the year. Congratulations Lions. Belfry 35 Lawrence County 12 The Dawgs are having a great season, but unfortantly for them, so is Belfry. Lawrence County has a chance to bounce back this week prior to staring the playoffs. Lewis County 28 West Carter 21 The Lions get back on their winning ways, and the Comets continue to be plagued by injuries. Coming Up This Week Raceland (7-2) vs. Ironton, OH (3-6) The Rams and the Tigers will play for the first time since 1966, and only the third time ever. The Tigers, a perennial power in Ohio, have had some trouble this season. Hampered by lower then normal numbers and a young team, Ironton has had several set backs. Raceland has secured the District Championship and preparing for the playoffs. The largest crowd ever is expected at Ram Stadium, should be a great playoff type atmosphere. Russell (6-3) vs. Pikeville (8-1) A year ago Russell dropped 1A Raceland who is two miles away, after Raceland had defeated the Red Devils five years in a row. To replace the Raceland game, the Red Devils added 1A Pikeville 100 miles away. The result may still be the same - a loss for Russell. Although, the Red Devils have been playing much improved over the last several weeks. Should be a great game. Fairview (8-1) at Gable Montessori, OH (3-6) The Eagles travel to Cincinnati to take on Gable Montessori. The big question will be, does the Fairview players have decals on their helmets? East Carter (2-7) at Greenup County (2-7) Two evenly matched records will battle for their third win in Lloyd. Greenup County lost a heart breaker to Boyd County last week. The Raiders had trouble with Russell. Should be a close score. Boyd County (1-8) vs. Tulsia, WV (3-5) The Lions got their first win of the season last week over Greenup County. Can they get two wins in a row? Lawrence County (6-3) at Prestonsburg (4-5) The Dawgs had a set back at the hands of Belfry last week, they have a real good shot of getting back on the winning path and going into the playoffs on a winning note. Lewis County (6-3) at Magoffin County (6-3) The Lions are looking for their seventh win of the year a little momentum heading into the playoffs. West Carter (2-7) at Paintsville (6-3) The Comets have hit hard times with multiple injuries to key players, don’t look for those hard times to end this week. Ashland - OPEN North-Eastern Kentucky Rankings Greenup County and Boyd County exchange places after the Lions defeated the Musketeers. Everyone else is staying put.
