Inside or Outside Cats. This is a polarizing topic, - TopicsExpress

Inside or Outside Cats. This is a polarizing topic, unfortunately. Many arguments have been caused by this discussion. It is often a cultural issue. We might find a greater proportion of people in the UK to feel outside is acceptable and more in the USA to feel it is not. Those who are very rural are more accepting of their cats being outside. There are some who are barn cats and are considered by some as working animals. Some can only ever be an outside cat in some situations. I cant profess to know what any situation is for each cat and person. The following is just my opinion. I share my personal view, please dont take offense, none is intended to those who feel differently than me. (Hate to always need a disclaimer.. but someone always reads into something more than what is there and takes offense and leaps to start some battle or another. So better try to be safe lol) There are so many reasons for cats not being allowed outside. I wish i could convince all those who think outside unsupervised is acceptable. I know i cant change minds by beating my beliefs into others. (though if the reader is amenable to bashing, let me know, ill try to help out *grin*) If we live where cars are, the risks of being ran over is very great. My neighbors thought their outside cats were safe... i watched their beautiful girl get ran over right at their driveway.. she struggled and cried while she bled out. They thought it was a fluke... their second cat also died in this sleepy little, no traffic neighborhood. They have two more cats now. Outside. The National Audubon Society suspended a longtime magazine columnist and bird lover after he wrote a column for another publication identifying Tylenol as an effective poison for cats. After a 10-day dispute that drew in parts of the journalism and wildlife communities, the society on Tuesday reinstated Ted Williams, a freelance writer for the society for the last 33 years, and said that his column would return in the magazine’s July-August issue. This because outside cats, feral cats killed birds. So we have a highly respected and well known, well read author advocating the killing of outside cats, your cats. Wonder how many now try to kill cats to protect the birds. There are more than a few cat haters out there. Are they in your neighborhood? Who knows? How many trials have you read about where people have taken and tortured animals that are free roaming? How about a dog that happens to wonder into your neighborhood and has a bite of tabby? Someone following this thread had their cat grabbed by an owl.. an owl is one of the very many predators that are higher on the predator food chain than a domestic cat ranks. There are many cases of birds of prey taking cats. Many say that cats NEED to run outside. We shouldnt deny them that freedom. I have to disagree. i have cats that are very happy to be indoor cats. We have a lot of environmental entertainment for them. If we are not willing to give them enough environmental enrichment then we really dont need cats. I personally believe (remember this is just my own view, not bashing any others) we should assume the complete responsibility for their health and well being. I have seen so many pets visiting a vets office (while i was there for well vet visits, amazed at how often I see this kind of thing) that were there with abscesses from fights with other animals while outside roaming without being under their owners positive control. We have the ability to prevent these deaths and injuries by being responsible pet owners. If we want to allow our pets outside, GREAT. Have a pet safe fencing (cat fence) take your pet out on a harness and leash.. if being outside is so important then do so responsibly. For the life of me, i cannot understand why we wouldnt make that compromise. Please forgive if i offended any sensibilities. I simply share my own opinion and i dont see me changing anyone elses belief if in opposition. I just hope to encourage those on the fence to consider their decision carefully.
