Inside the single-room house Mr Clarke cleared an old wooden kitchen table of dirty dishes, overripe bananas, apple peel and week-old bread. John and Cora took a seat at the table and as John wrote out a cheque, Cora looked around. One of the steel and vinyl-padded chairs was sitting against a wall under a pile of old sun-bleached newspapers. Millie sat on the top step, wagging her tail and watching as Mr Clarke went from a tap beside the door where he had filled the cast-iron kettle, back to the slowly smouldering wood stove, which he then stoked up with extra wood. “I hope you like tea,” he said.
