Inspiration found in our history Manchester United fans and players alike can draw inspiration from events at Old Trafford 30 years ago this week, as the Reds aim to overturn a first-leg deficit against Olympiacos on Wednesday night. Back in March 1984, Diego Maradona’s Barcelona came to Old Trafford with the same advantage that the Greek champions are bringing - a 2-0 lead to protect. But a Herculean effort from the Reds, masterminded by manager Ron Atkinson and captain Bryan Robson, dragged United into the next round via an unforgettable 3-0 victory. Those at the game, almost to a man, describe that night as the greatest atmosphere ever generated at Old Trafford. Robson recalls the ground shaking while others have likened the noise that met United’s third goal as akin to an aeroplane taking off.
