Inspired by Beth Macys book Factory Man , soon to be an HBO series I wrote this song . Ill share it with you for just a few days and then take it back to private viewing. My brother Ben Dyer painted this scene from the high school window of the factories that once populated the area of Southwest Virginia and provided jobs for many for generations. I was the one who sat in study hall and studied Hit Parade magazine, dreaming of getting out, going to college, and not working in the factories. But these days, so much of the area has been devastated from all the jobs that went overseas and it still hasnt recovered. I read an article recently that 1. 3 million jobs were lost. It was fun to sing retro country on this song.It just seemed to fit. Ive just started learning to play piano this year , and this was the first song I wrote on that instrument. I learned to dream big in that town, or at least down the road from it. There wasnt a whole lot else to do.I learned to read as many great books as I could there, and started writing there too. This is only one slice of the Factory Man book and what happened to that area of the country. A song is not a book, but I tried to capture a slice of the truth.
