Inspired by those people who have changed their profile pictures to the Arabic letter that is used as a symbol for Christian, in solidarity with the Christians being attacked by ISIS/ISIL in Iraq and Syria, but wanting to express solidarity with all of humanity, I went looking for the Arabic word for human or humanity. In English script it seems to be insaan or ensan, and the initial letter looks the same, to my unlettered eyes, as the ones all those people are using. I definitely have Arabic-speaking Facebook friends who can correct me on this, if they want to. Im not making any particular political point, except that I want to identify as a human being standing with all human beings everywhere, particularly those being oppressed and killed, rather than to identify as a member of any particular subgroup of humanity. At least partly because every subgroup that is being oppressed somewhere is likely oppressing somewhere else. Or somewhen else.
