Instead of taking the holiday day off and sleeping in, we held - TopicsExpress

Instead of taking the holiday day off and sleeping in, we held school today so that we could discuss Martin Luther King, Jr., Day and the Civil Rights movement. It was definitely the right decision. Im just back from a powerful lesson this morning around Kings Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The students marveled at the clarity and thoughtfulness of his arguments and his beautiful phrasing, all of it written from an uncomfortable and overcrowded jail cell in Alabama and in the midst of a terrifying and wearying civil rights movement. (I thought, but didnt say: This is why we must learn to form coherent, careful and thoughtful arguments and express ourselves clearly, because language is a mighty ally. I didnt have to say that because King did). Its an amazing letter; if youve not read it, I highly recommend it.
