Insulin / Cortisol and Festivals - Festivals bring in good times and Festivals = Sweets & Celebration. While celebrating festivals has its own reasons in each culture, religions and communities. Festivals also bring people together and creates a great environment for mental emotional wellbeing. Though physically it creates a challenging situation with all the sweets, delicacies and late nights. The 2 hormones that usually get affected in all this chaos are Insulin and Cortisol. Insulin - Is a hormone released by pancreas. Insulin helps control the blood glucose levels by signaling various cells including fat cells and liver to take up glucose and store as glycogen. Muscles and Liver will store glucose as glycogen whereas fat will store it as tryglycerides. Liver will store glycogen upto 5% of its size after the mucles are full of glycogen. Fats will be the last ones to initiate process of converting glucose to tryglycerides and storing it. Excessive insulin will inhibit or weaken the process of fat break down. The amount of carbohydrate and sweet intake during the festivals increases the insulin secretion in out body. Excess of glucose i.e. energy for your body will be stored as tryglycerides in your fat and excess of insulin secretion will also put you at the risk of becoming a type2 diabetic i.e. insulin resistance type. Knowing what you eat and how much to eat is very important throughout the year. Festivals amd occasions will always keep coming every year. Cortisol - Cortisol is hormone released during a fight or flight situation. Prehistoric man would face these situations while hinting or for survival. Adrenaline released during such situations supresses hunger. Craving for sugar increases in such situations as physiologically your endocrine system thinks you need energy for such a vigorous physical activity in a fight or flight situation. In todays world we face stress more than a fight or flight situation. As a result cortisol is constantly released and the endocrine system which responds to the stress signals creates a demand for sugar. Which leads to cravings for sugary food i.e. carbohydrate. High cortisol levels will make this excess energy get stored in your body as visceral fat around your stomach. Understanding your wellbeing and health is mkre important wgen tackling issues of weight loss. Exercise is not enough. Lifestyle analysis and change in Lifestyle is required for a successful weight loss. Often you will find people with hormonal issues complaining they dont lose weight inspite of doing everything. Late nights, lack of sleep, and too much Festival delicacies will create a stressful environment for your body. Mentally & Emotionally - Festivals are a great time for familiy and friends. Mentally we get a break from the usual stuff we do and Emotionally it helps when we meet our family and friends. A true Happy Time. Just needs to be managed well with more awareness.
