Intangible cultural heritage The ninth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage concludes today, the 28 November, at UNESCOs headquarters in Paris. Last year, the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre in the Asia Pacific Region (ICHCAP), jointly published an 11 page brochure, Traditional Knowledge for Adapting to Climate Change. Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Pacific. The brochure highlights some of the many ways that intangible cultural heritage contributes to climate change resilience. The loss of traditional building methods and materials, is one risk factor that challenges disaster management approaches. The adaptive qualities of traditional approaches to design and construction, can outperform inappropriate application of Western building techniques, forms and materials. To this end, reinvigorating the positive aspects of traditional buildings through providing incentives and encouragement to master craftspeople, was a recommendation of the Samoan Government’s Post Disaster Needs Assessment, following Cyclone Evan in 2012. Worth thinking more about this type of strategy. unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0022/002253/225313E.pdf
