International Public Interest Pro Bono Research & Writing Projects Benefits: · Closely work with faculty member and/or practitioner · Develop international and/or foreign law legal research and writing skills · Connect with an international NGO client · Further the cause of human rights, corporate accountability and environmental protection Projects: 1. Constitutional Right to Dignity = Right to Healthy Environment · Organizational Client: Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide · Approximate time commitment: 30 hours divided between two students · Due date: December 2013 · UW Law direct supervisor/faculty advisor: Todd Wildermuth · Eligible students: 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, LLMs · The project: The Right to Life constitutional provision has been interpreted by many courts to confer the right to a healthy environment. Can a parallel argument be made with a Right to Dignity provision? Which countries have a Right to Dignity provision? How has the Right to Dignity constitutional provision been interpreted by courts? Climate Change & Corporate Accountability · Organizational Client: Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide · Approximate time commitment: 30 hours divided between two students · Due date: February 2014 · Eligible students: 2Ls, 3Ls, LLMs · UW Law direct supervisor/faculty advisor: Sanne Knudsen · The project: If a successful claim for damages is obtained against private companies that have contributed to climate change impacts, how would the damages be apportioned between multiple defendant companies? Assume that we know a company has contributed 10 percent of historic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Could the theories of market share liability and/or enterprise liability be used to obtain damages from this company? What court decisions support or refute either of these approaches? Business & Human Rights Manual/Thematic Research Guide · Organizational Client: International Justice Resource Center · Approximate time commitment: 30 hours divided between two students · Due date: February 2014 · Eligible students: 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, LLMs · UW Law direct supervisor: Aline Carton-Listfjeld · The project: This approximately 12-page, singled spaced thematic guide will provide a comparative and thorough summary of the area of business and human rights law (intersection of corporate accountability and human rights) and the opportunities for enforcing those laws. Look at the guides on Children’s Rights and Asylumas examples.
