Interesting and very true..Many employers will offer these benefits, and then sharply dictate how you can use them. For instance, many companies don’t like their employees taking more than one week off at a time. Even employees that have been with the company 20 years and have earned, say, 4 weeks of vacation time, might only be allowed to take it in one-week chunks. Others want their people to be available by cell phone or email, regardless of what their plans are. Still others will tell you to use PTO or vacation time for any mandatory overtime you can’t work, which slowly drains away your vacation time. Mandatory overtime is a different monster, but it contributes heavily to Americans not having much leisure time and family time. Besides this, in 2010, 43% of Americans with paid vacation time didn’t take all of it, and 50% do either willingly, or are pressured to, stay connected to the office no matter what their vacation plans are. So that 7-day hike down part of the Appalachian Trail, or that big sailing trip or camping trip in the middle of nowhere? Forget it. Never mind trying to travel to another country for your vacation.
