Interesting argument.. One idea that was recently put to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander was a stay-at-home allowance for parents and carers of around £40 a week – equivalent to £10,000 a year. The idea is from the Lib Dem activist Elizabeth Jewkes, who told Nick Clegg, many years ago, to raise the income tax threshold to £10,000. She says it would give parents and carers at home a “value” and it wouldn’t cost too much – compared to the net benefits these people bring. Ms Jewkes tried to get the proposal debated on the conference platform but said Mr Alexander was only interested in working parents. It’s clear that politicians want parents to have it all, they just have nothing to say when we don’t.
