Interesting big-think discussion of surveillance and privacy - TopicsExpress

Interesting big-think discussion of surveillance and privacy issues in the linked article. When I said that Freedom of Information laws were important for how they set the culture of government actions, these are the kinds of subjects that I had in mind. This year, a lot of us are talking about disclosure of the Sandy Hook crime scene documents as a reason to limit public information access, and to my mind, the compromise should be less about how much to limit freedom of information, and more about examining what kinds of documents should be collected and created in these situations. If there will be some harm generated by public disclosure (and the grief the families are feeling cant be discounted), wouldnt it be better for our police to ask themselves what the evidentiary value of creating these documents will be, and possibly come down on the side of restraint? Whose lives were improved by these photos being taken in the first place? I had the opportunity to thank Senator Musto for speaking up for freedom of information yesterday (though to be clear, I dont know if hed agree with everything Im saying here), and hope that he is able to succeed in protecting FOI this session. But this is an area where we need to do much more.
