Interesting debate I went through. Met an aspiring journalist in Cali. Nice kid, asked for advice. So we sat down to talk—and he was painfully cocky. Thought he was Gods gift to journalism. Didnt seem to have much interest in learning the ropes. etc. In short, he reminded me of me, 1996. He sent me a follow-up e-mail, asking to keep in touch, requesting I look at his clips. So (again, after much debate), I wrote him a pretty blunt letter about all my screw-ups, and how nobody in the field is impressed by cockiness, and the value of listening and asking questions. Hell surely hate it. But ... hey.
