Interesting editorial in tonights paper A threat to liberties This no longer is about George Zimmerman, it’s about a Department of Justice serving political interests. There’s a reason we stand up for the rights of individuals like George Zimmerman against an overreaching State. It’s not just about the individual. It’s about all of us, and the reality that there but for fortune could go you or I. The highly politicized Department of Justice desperately wants to bring federal charges to placate the race-agitators, and has joined in the witch hunt. So says Cornell law professor William Jacobsen whose blog, Legal Insurrection, gave the most thorough coverage of the trial that decided that self-defense justified the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the DOJ is soliciting email tips in a Zimmerman civil rights probe. Never mind that before the trial, the FBI found no credible evidence of racial intent after interviewing 40 people about the case. The DOJ appealed to civil rights groups for assistance, according to a conference call held by Tom Perez, assistant attorney general for civil rights and Obama’s highly controversial nominee to head the Department of Labor. Freedom of Information requests from Judicial Watch resulted in the release of DOJ emails that revealed that before charges were pressed against Zimmerman that members of the DOJ Community Response Service (CRS) helped organize protests to galvanize public opinion to press for those charges. One of the leaders of the group helped by the DOJ was associated with an ACORN front group and the national Occupy movement. The CRS provided technical assistance in preparation for possible demonstrations and Judicial Watch said," press reports along with the documents obtained by Judicial Watch suggest that the unit deployed to Sanford, FL, took an active role in working with those demanding the prosecution of Zimmerman." Zimmerman was tried before a jury both the prosecution and defense agreed to, and any single juror could have stopped the not guilty verdict. Mr. Zimmerman is part Hispanic and one-quarter black. Yet Senate majority leader Harry Reid, attorney general Eric Holder and Barack Obama continue to persecute Mr. Zimmerman? Are they pursuing the issue to foment political unrest, because they are racist, or because they want a system where mob rule overtakes the rule of law? Deciding when to prosecute calls for even-handed justice. In 2009, DOJ political appointees overruled career staff to stop a default judgement against alleged voter intimidation by New Black Panthers at a Philadelphia polling station where they were accused of using military-style uniforms, racial insults, and a weapon to turn away voters. Who guards us from guardians at the Department of Justice? It is no idle comment when Jacobsen observes, "This no longer is about George Zimmerman. It’s about a Department of Justice which does not deserve our trust and is a threat to our liberties."
