Interesting fact about WW1, read on.... Point Nepean, located on the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula Victoria. A truly beautiful place. Underground tunnels were used by our defence forces here. There is even a Hydraulic Gun which is hidden underground so the enemy could not see it. When England declared war on Germany in 1914 at approx 9am, We had a German ship here which had just finished loading coal to take back to Germany. They knew war was coming so they tried to leave before we could find out. Sadly for the German ship, word got through and these guns fired 1 shot (first shot fired during WW1) in front of the ship to stop her from leaving. The shot was so accurate that the captain surrendered and they became the first German prisoners of war. 2 things fascinating about this story.... 1st being that we fired the first shots during WW1 and 2 being we captured the 1st German prisoners of WW1. Considering we are half a world away, I think thats amazing.
